Leyona, Here is my response to Ms Marks ----- Original Message ----- From: Carol Goldman To: DAJamDowns@aol.com Sent: Monday, January 09, 2006 4:29 PM Subject: Re: Heather Skarina Ms Marks, I am aware the District Attorney's office does not investigate crimes, they prosecute criminals and refers cases to the Grand Jury. I was instructed by Detective Mike Stevens of the Rapides Sheriff's office (who is in charge of the on-going investigation into Heather Renee Skarina's death) to mail a copy of the letter which you are in receipt of. He stated he had spoken with both Mr. Downs and Mr. Van Dyke and was told to present a packet to the District Attorneys office and it would be forwarded to the new Grand Jury convening this month. I was to list all my concerns, issues, questions, facts, conflicts of information, basically anything and everything I thought of. Are you stating your office is not aware of this? Am I being misled by the Rapides Sheriff's Office? Your memo to me reads as though you are assuming I just wrote the letter thinking you would proceed with an investigation, and not that I was writing per instructions given to me by the Sheriff's office. Please advise, as I have written a follow-up letter with additional information regarding the case. I have recently found out Michael D Skarina is employed as a Rapides Sheriff Deputy and has been since August 2002. Detective Stephans has in fact spoken about his investigation with our First Assistant D.A., Mr. Andy Van Dyke. Mr. Van Dyke has agreed to look at any file material the sheriff's office sends to our office. Once we are in receipt of the sheriff's office file, I am sure that Mr. Van Dyke will review the investigation with the detective and a determination will be made as to whether the material should be presented to a grand jury. I certainly do not believe that you are being misled by anyone and I apologize if you got that impression. I am sure that Detective Stephans will let you know when he has delivered the investigative material to our office and conferred with Mr. Van Dyke. I have given your original letter and copies of these emails to Mr. Van Dyke. Feel free to contact our office if we can assist you. Tami Marks Executive Secretary to James C.
